With Steve Young entrenched after Montana's elbow injury cost him nearly two seasons, the 49ers sent Joe Montana, S David Whitmore, and a 1994 third-rounder to Kansas City for the Chiefs' 1993 first-round pick (No. 18). Montana turned down a richer Cardinals offer (3 yrs/$15M) to take the Chiefs' 3-yr/$10M deal, then led Kansas City to the AFC Championship Game in 1993.
