After DT Sean Gilbert sat out 1997 under the franchise tag and was tagged again in 1998 (a grievance he lost), Washington declined to match Carolina's $46.5M offer and netted first-rounders in 1999 and 2000. The 1999 pick became No. 5 overall, which Washington flipped to New Orleans for eight picks so the Saints could draft Ricky Williams; the 2000 pick (No. 12) became DE Shaun Ellis. Widely called the worst trade in Panthers history.
